Disgraced Blatter Plans FIFA Reforms

first_imgTwo days after becoming the face of soccer corruption, disgraced FIFA President Sepp Blatter said June 4 he has already started working on ways to clean up the sport’s governing body.Blatter, who announced his decision to resign on June 2 as the FIFA corruption crisis continues to build and spread around the world, tweeted a photo of himself sitting in a leather chair with a light blue jacket and no tie.“Working hard on reforms after meeting Audit & Compliance Committee Independent Chairman Scala,” Blatter wrote, along with a link to a statement released by FIFA.FIFA has been plunged into crisis for more than a week, ever since seven soccer officials were arrested at a luxury Zurich hotel ahead of the FIFA congress. They were among 14 people indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice on corruption charges.A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, has said that the 79-year-old Blatter is a target of the investigation. Blatter has not been officially implicated in the case. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the case is ongoing. In his statement on June 4, the first since calling for new elections to find a successor, Blatter said he met with FIFA Audit Panel Chairman Domenico Scala “to establish a framework for action and a timetable” for his final months. He made no mention of his status as a target of the American investigation. Instead, he kept the short statement focused on reforming an organization he has presided over for 17 years.“I want a comprehensive program of reform and I am very aware that only the FIFA Congress can pass these reforms,” Blatter said in the statement. In a separate investigation, Swiss authorities are looking into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding contests won by Russia and Qatar. In his resignation speech on June 2, Blatter promised a final round of modernizing reforms before leaving office. That includes finding a date for a presidential election by next March. He also pledged to bring in term limits for his successor and FIFA Executive Committee members, and tougher integrity checks for election candidates.Blatter’s statement came after separate investigations into soccer corruption were opened in South Africa and Australia, and after the headquarters of the Venezuelan Football Federation was raided by military intelligence officers. The South African probe revolves around allegations of bribery related to the country’s winning bid for the 2010 World Cup, while Australian authorities are investigating corruption claims surrounding Australia’s failed bid for the 2022 World Cup.(GRAHAM DUNBAR, AP Sports Writer)TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Atlanta Hawks Thabo Sefolosha Awarded 4M In Police Scuffle

Thabo Sefolosha will wrap his Atlanta Hawks career with a lawsuit settlement.(Jonathan Bachman/Getty Images Sport/Getty Images)Atlanta Hawks’ forward Thabo Sefolosha will get a $4-million settlement in a police-brutality suit he filed against the NYPD that he said broke his leg and left him unable to finish the NBA season in 2015.“This settlement is not a concession that Mr. Sefolosha was blameless in this matter and there was no admission of liability by the defendants,” the city law department said in a statement to the New York Daily News. “But, in light of the gravity of his injuries, the potential impact on his career as a professional athlete and the challenge for a jury in sorting out the facts in this incident, the resolution of the case was in the best interests of the city.”The $4-million payout is a fraction of the $50 million Sefolosha originally sought from the New York City Police Department and the city it serves in October 2015.As previously reported, police maintained they had been close to Manhattan, N.Y.’s 1Oak nightclub in April 2015 addressing the stabbing of now-Turkish Basketball Super League player Chris Copeland. The cops claimed Sefolosha questioned their authority, adding they were simply trying to keep him out of the area. Sefolosha said he handed a homeless man money near the club when officers pulled him to the ground, arresting Sefolosha and breaking his leg. Former Hawks teammate Pero Antic had accompanied Sefolosha to the club and also was arrested.Sefolosha, whose suit also pointed to a “racial matter” regarding the hoodie he wore at the time of his arrest, testified that he referred to NYPD Officer Jean Paul Giacona as “a midget,” according to NYDN, before he was dragged to the ground. The act of police brutality injured the 6-foot-6 baller’s leg and could have ended his NBA career, his lawsuit said.Charges against Sefolosha stemming from the incident, including disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, were dismissed in October 2015.The 2016-2017 NBA season will be Sefolosha’s last as a Hawk as his three-year, $12-million deal comes to a close, Yahoo reported. He will become a free agent this summer, while Antic, who also sued the city over the scuffle, is playing for the Turkish Basketball Super League. Antic’s federal lawsuit over the incident is pending. read more

Turner Is Trying To Influence Key Players In Austin To Get The

The Lieutenant Governor will designate five Senators who will serve on the conference committee.Speaker Joe Straus, with whom the Mayor is also in contact, will do the same in the House of Representatives. The members of the conference committee are important because they will decide which amendments remain and which are removed. So, Turner is letting Patrick and Straus know which amendments he doesn’t want to survive.Al OrtizHouston Mayor Sylvester Turner is communicating with Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and House Speaker Joe Straus to let them know which amendments he doesn’t want in the final version of the pension reform bill because he doesn’t think they will benefit the City’s finances. The amendment the Mayor sees as the main problem is authored by Representative Dwayne Bohac (Republican-Houston) and would exempt more than 3,000 retired firefighters from benefit cuts.“It’s the one that has the highest cost. It’s twenty 27 dollars annually and it adds 400 million dollars to the unfunded liability,” noted Turner. The legislative session ends on May 29th and the Mayor is confident there is enough time for the bill to pass.EDITOR’S NOTE: This story has been corrected from an earlier version. There is one conference committee, not two. We regret the error. X last_img read more

DC Rapper Wale Sounds Off About Fatherhood

Fatherhood is wavy,” the D.C.-area rapper wrote on Twitter. “I’m ridiculously proud of this creation.”According to TMZ, the arrival of baby Zyla caused the 31-year-old to cancel a scheduled performance at the One Africa Music Fest in Brooklyn on July 22. Wale welcomed the baby with longtime girlfriend Chloe Alexis, but said he kept the secret of her pregnancy close because of “the downward spiral that ensued” when a past pregnancy ended after complications.“I kept this very private as I prayed every day to receive this blessing,” Wale said in lengthy Instagram post, which included baby Zyla’s hand grasping his own. “Imma keep workin on me and pray to God I can design a young princess who flourishes to an absolute queen.”Wale said that he decided on the title of his new album “Shine” when he found out he had a baby girl on the way.“I want to be a better man than I ever been.” he wrote. “I’m so flawed I’m so imperfect and the world knows it…I just want to honestly be the best version of myself I can be,” he said. “My focus is renewed I’m infinitely in love with my princess.”In the days since her birth, Wale has sung his daughter’s praises all over social media calling her “beautiful” and “perfect,” adding that the day she was born was the first time he ever “cried and smiled at the same time.”The Nigerian-born artist’s was thrust into the international spotlight with hits like “Pretty Girls,” “Diary,” and “90210” off his debut album “Attention Deficit,” released in 2009. More drama less love this Valentine

first_imgCome and witness the two plays called The Plaza Suite and Ek The Bhoot. Two different genres which vouch to take you on an emotional rush ride. Produced by Curtain Call productions, The Plaza Suite is directed by Vishesh Dhuria and Ek The Bhoot by Manil Mayank Mishra.Categorised as a Rom-Com, The Plaza Suite is composed of three acts, each involving different characters but all set in Suite 719 of New York city’s Plaza hotel. ‘It’s a tribute to Valentine’s day from my end. I am hugely inspired by Neil Simons stories. This story is also written by him. It further portrays all sorts of emotions involved in relationships. The story follows how three couples undergoing different conflicts meet on a common ground in the suite and how they find a vent to their personal issues,’ says Vishesh. The second play, Ek Tha Bhoot is a satire with a message on how God is is both the creator and the caretaker of the universe, but that doesn’t mean that human beings should just leave everything in his hands. They too have to do their part because in the end, God looks after the ones who look after themselves. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’‘The play is adapted from Vijay Tendulkar’s Vitthala. We have taken the entire ideology and contemporarised it for the viability of the audience’s understanding. Though the morality bent and lesson remains the same. The major highlight being the dichotomy between the existence of god and ghosts good vs evil debate is seen in a new light. Finally I have tried to re-root and reinvent the conceptual understanding of the existing good and bad in the  society which would take a space in people’s hearts,’ says Manil. When: 14 FebruaryWhere: Akshara Theatrelast_img read more

More copy masters in Sarod

first_imgThere are more “copy masters” and fewer trendsetters among those playing the sarod these days, laments maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, saying the focus for performers today is the “shining, glittering” world of television and social media. “Since they have access to content and recordings especially on YouTube, it’s easy for them to imitate any sarod player. So, now we have lots of copy masters in the country. The trendsetters are very, very rare,” the 72-year-old music guru said. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”Globally, there are about 500 sarod players. Unfortunately, instead of learning and understanding the depth of Indian classical music, every sarod player has a very strong opinion,” he further explained being very sad about the present state. “The focus is only to perform because of the glittering, shining world of television and social media where you can post anything and say anything,” the sarod virtuoso maintained. Khan is sixth in the lineage of a family devoted to Indian classical music’s Senia Bangash Gharana. The 2001 Padma Vibushan recipient first performed when he was just six years old. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveKhan, who was trained by his father, Gwalior court musician Hafiz Ali Khan, said he couldn’t think of doing anything other than playing the sarod as its sound had a global appeal. “It was my duty, my pleasure, my passion to carry on the family tradition,” he said, referring to the work of the generations before him and his ambition to take it forward. “I wanted to make the canvas much larger, much bigger, and be more expressive on the Sarod,” the widely-heard musician added. He also pointed to the differences between his learning days and the present day. “I didn’t have access to tape-recorders because there was no money to buy them. There was no television; One could only hear music through All India Radio. “There used to be a very important programme on Saturday night which I heard, called the National Programme of Music,” he recalled. On teaching his own sons, Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash — themselves established names in the field of sarod — the Ustad said that it was a big responsibility.”Teaching my own sons was not my decision. They showed interest and positive signs, and then I shared everything with them,” he said. “I tried to introduce music to Amaan, my elder son, from his very early days. I tried interesting methods to teach so that he doesn’t find it difficult.” Ayaan, his younger son, soon followed in his footsteps, and as per the music maestro, both of them are on the “right track” in life. After rendering the National Anthem on sarod, they recently turned to the bhajan “Vaishnav Jan To”, which Mahatma Gandhi held close to his heart. They rendered it an an HCL concert, part of a monthly series, here last week. His association with Gandhi goes back to his 125th birth anniversary, when he played an improvised ‘Baapu Cause’ ‘raga’ at a Unesco commemoration in Paris.IANSlast_img read more
