Man honours grandfather with crossCanada bike trip

A Brampton man is nearing his goal of cycling across Canada’s 10 provinces to raise money for Alzheimer’s.Skyler Roberts says he is doing this for his grandfather,  who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s several years ago and died in January.The 21-year-old and his best friend kicked off an 8,000 kilometre ride in Victoria three months ago.They cycle during the day, and at night, they either set up camp or stay with people in the towns they’re travelling through.The pair recently arrived in Halifax.They plan to bike up to Cape Breton and hop on a ferry to Port aux Basques, N.L., before making their way to St. John’s, N.L.They’ll finish their journey there by dipping their feet in the Atlantic Ocean.He has already raised around $2,000 for the Alzheimer Society of Canada.Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia.According to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, there are currently 564,000 Canadians are currently living with dementia.That number is expected to increase to 937,000 in 15 years. read more
