DEL RIO, Texas, CMC – The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency says officers assigned to the Del Rio Sector in Texas have arrested over 1,000 Haitian nationals in less than one month.Earlier in June, nearly 200 Haitian immigrants were arrested over a one week period at the same Del Rio station in Texas. As tension continues to mount in Haiti, with ongoing riots, the United States has seen a significant increase in immigrants at the border this year.“Our agents are seeing a rise in Haitian nationals entering the country illegally which presents challenges that we are meeting head-on,” said Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Raul L. Ortiz in a statement on Friday. “We will continue to do everything we can to care for these family units with small children.”CBP said that, since June 10, agents in Del Rio Sector have arrested over 1,000 Haitian nationals, which include a group of over 100 on June 22 and a group of over 200 on June 24.Prior to June 10, Del Rio Sector had arrested only 17 Haitian nationals this fiscal year, CBP said.“This demographic is unique in that most are family units with a biological minor child who is a national of a third country, usually in South America. About 800 of the 1,000 apprehensions are members of a family unit, and include over 230 minor children who are nationals of a third country, such as Brazil and Chile.”CBP said many of these family units have resided in Chile and other South American countries, for several years, prior to departing for the United States.Del Rio Sector’s total apprehensions to date this year are in excess of 40,000, already more than double the total number of arrests made during the previous fiscal year.According to CBP, more than 34,000 of the individuals arrested this year, over 80 percent, are from about 49 countries other than Mexico. The arrest of the Haitians come as Caribbean American Democratic Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke late last month voted in favor a US$4.5 billion emergency border supplemental appropriations bill in the US House of Representatives that she said would address the “urgent humanitarian situation” at the southern United States border.“The bill provides significant funding for priorities to meet the needs of vulnerable children, including food, water, medical services, legal assistance, support services for unaccompanied children, alternatives to detention and refugee services,” Clarke, the daughter of Jamaican immigrants, who represents the 9th Congressional District in Brooklyn. She said the bill, also known as H.R. 3401, also contains “important oversight provisions to hold the (Trump) administration accountable and to insist the administration start to protect the rights of immigrants.

KODIKARA (Photo credit should read Ishara S.KODIKARA/AFP/Getty Images) LONDON, England, CMC – West Indies legend Sir Garfield Sobers has paid tribute to Malcolm Nash, a former Glamorgan bowler he once famously hit for six sixes in an over, saying they remained good friends despite the battering.All-rounder Nash, a left-arm bowler who played for Glamorgan, died Wednesday at age 74.He received the punishment from Sobers, then with Nottinghamshire, in a county match at Swansea in 1968.It was an iconic moment in world sport because it was the first time a bowler had been hit for 36 in an over in first-class cricket.Paying tribute to Malcolm Nash, Sobers, 83, said: “He was a good friend of mine and we always kept that friendship. He was a nice man.“We played against each other and I was fortunate to hit six sixes against him, but things never changed. As far as we were concerned we were always friends in spite of what happened on the cricket field.”Sobers said Nash had kept his sense of humour despite being hit for six sixes.“When we were asked to go up to be interviewed afterwards I looked back over my shoulder and saw him smiling,” said Sobers.“I said, ‘Mally, what are you smiling at?’ And he said, ‘I want you to know you could not have achieved this without me’!”Sobers said he recalled Nash driving from Wales to London last year when he was there.“He (Nash) was writing his new book and he asked him me to look at his book and sign it. I am very shocked and it is sad to hear (of his passing).”Nash took 993 first-class wickets between 1966 and 1983 and was Glamorgan’s leading wicket-taker when they won the County Championship in 1969.

(Photo by Carlos Rodrigues/Getty Images)Immediate past English champions Leicester City have been dealt a big blow after world football’s governing body, FIFA, rejected the English Football Association (FA)’s request to veto Adrien Silva’s move to the club.Leicester City and Sporting Lisbon agreed a £22m for the transfer of the Portuguese international midfielder but the move didn’t materialise after FIFA said the Foxes submitted the paperwork for the transfer after the August 31 transfer deadline had expired by 14 seconds.FIFA thereafter withheld his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) so that Leicester City won’t be able to register him. With the latest development, Leicester City have to wait until the January transfer reopens before they can add Silva to their playing squad.Adrien Silva was a direct replacement for England international Danny Drinkwater, who left for champions Chelsea in a £35m deal on deadline day. The club’s inability to secure his transfer now means they have to stick with Wilfred Ndidi, Matty James and Andy King as their midfield options till January.RelatedLeaked! Pressured by industry stakeholders and sporting bodies, German officials rushed to present new amendments to the EU last October, with the purpose of amending the national gambling framework and fast tracking licensed sports betting.Backed by a number of German cross-party ministers, the amendments presented in the Second Treaty would lift the Controversial Hesse 20-operator cap which had been dismissed by European courts for breaching EU competition laws and business practices. The new provisions presented, called for temporary betting permits to be issued to 35 applicant operators allowing them to service the German sports betting market until 2018 when Bundestag constituencies aim to release a new nationwide gambling framework. However, this week German media reports that the EC has contacted the German government stating that its provisional state treaty is an unworkable solution for industry stakeholders and business purposes.German lawmakers will now return to the drawing board with regards to creating a workable sports betting regulatory framework. Since the failure of its original sports betting licensing framework, the state of Hesse no longer commands the directive of national sports betting provisions.
