Softball Edges Evansville, 3-2, On Sunday To Complete Series Sweep

first_img EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Drake University softball team edged Evansville, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon to complete the series sweep in the opening weekend of Missouri Valley Conference play. Drake (12-10, 3-0 MVC) sophomore Kelsey Wright (Olathe, Kan.), who went 2-for-3 at the plate, drove in the deciding run with a RBI single in the fourth inning after Evansville (11-12, 0-3 MVC) had tied the game at 2-2 in the previous inning. Starting pitcher Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) was untouchable in the circle after Wright’s big hit as she didn’t allow a single Purple Aces hitter to reach base in the final four innings. Newman tossed her second complete game in as many days to earn the win and improve to 10-5 on the season. She allowed just two runs on two hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Wright scored Drake’s first run of the game in the third inning coming in on an RBI single by freshman Taryn Pena (Columbia, Ill.). The Bulldogs added one more run in the frame on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Kailee Smith (Murrieta, Calif.). Evansville’s two runs were scored in the bottom of the third inning. Newman hit the first batter, then allowed a one-out base hit and walked a batter to load the bases. The Purple Aces capitalized with a double that scored the two runs but the Purple Ace who walked was thrown out at home plate trying to score as the Bulldogs got out of the inning without further damage. Wright led the offense with two hits while four others had at least one hit in the game. Drake is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts South Dakota State in its home opener.
