TAGS: Georgia Get to know Georgia’s Beka GorgadzeMamuka Gorgodze is the most famous rugby player to come out of Georgia, but there’s a new kid on the block who could see his famous nickname tweaked to ‘Gorgadzilla’. The different vowel in Beka Gorgadze’s surname is not the only area where the two players contrast – we’ll get onto the younger man’s skill-set later – but they are both talismanic figures on the pitch.Four years ago, Gorgadze, then just 19, was part of Georgia’s World Cup training squad alongside Gorgodze, and while he didn’t make the final cut for the tournament in England, he did get to play in three Tests alongside his childhood hero over the next two years. “I played eight, he was seven,” Gorgadze says. “It was a massive honour for me to study next to him and I learnt a lot.”Back in 2015, the older man was instrumental in Georgia making history in automatically qualifying for the next World Cup by finishing third in the pool. This year, while Gorgodze has made a surprise return to the squad for the World Cup, his near-namesake will also be a key figure as the ‘Lelos’ strive to do the same in Japan. The 23-year-old doesn’t possess the same raw power as Gorgodze, but he stands out as a leader.Back in the fold: Mamuka Gorgodze (centre) during Georgia training in Japan (Getty Images)“There’s no doubt Beka has certain qualities that endear him to players following him – a) his personality, b) his skill-set,” says Georgia coach Milton Haig. “He’s a smart player and a very intelligent man. He has great humility and doesn’t let success cloud who he is. If you look at his character, he’s the type of guy you can build teams around.“He’s a different type of player to Mamuka. I’m sure Mamuka won’t mind me saying Beka has more skills and is the type of guy we think would make it in Super Rugby. He’s not as big and abrasive and doesn’t have the same out-and-out strength as Mamuka, but he’s a skilful player and definitely has those leadership qualities.”Haig also pays tribute to Gorgadze for putting in such strong performances last season after a year-long injury absence. He needed three operations after tearing ligaments in his ankle in May 2017 but returned to start six of Georgia’s eight Tests in 2018-19 and Haig describes his comeback as “phenomenal”.It was another injury that saw Gorgadze find his niche at No 8. He followed his cousin in swapping the round ball for the oval one when he was seven after an age-range change meant he could no longer play in the same football team as his friends. After stints at fly-half and centre for his local club Kharebi in the city of Rustavi, he moved to the front row and played there until his mid-teens, when a back problem arose.“I was trying to prop in the scrum and couldn’t because I’d hurt my back,” recalls Gorgadze, who pays tribute to the influence of his mother after his father died in 2000. “I didn’t need surgery but I had to do special exercises for my back and was put on a diet to lose 6kg (nearly a stone). I then grew 6cm in three months, so the next season I played in the back row.“My favourite position is No 8. The strategy is often for me to be on the edge, taking high balls and running back. I like the technical stuff – high balls, skills – as well as the physical game.”It’s fitting that Gorgadze names Kieran Read as one of the players he admires for the Kiwi fulfils a similar role for the All Blacks: positioned in the wide channels to use his power and ball skills to bust defences and create opportunities. Duane Vermeulen is another Gorgadze namechecks, while acknowledging he cannot replicate the brute force that is central to the Springboks No 8’s game.Gorgadze, who plays his club rugby in France and joined Bordeaux-Bègles from Stade Montois last year, is a powerful ball-carrier but there is also an athleticism to his play that suits the modern game. Graham Rowntree, who has been working as Georgia’s forwards coach for the past year, is a big fan. In attack: Beka Gorgadze carrying strongly against Spain (Getty Images,)“I call him ‘Rock Star’,” chuckles the ex-England and Lions prop. “He’s one hell of an athlete and an exceptional player – you forget how young he is.He picks things up very quickly, is very dynamic, a good footballer and a hard worker. He’ll be a star of world rugby.”Gorgadze is already making indents into the wider rugby consciousness. Last autumn he was named alongside Sam Underhill and Justin Tipuric in the back row of The Telegraph’s Team of the Week for his performance in defeat against Italy – his first Test for 20 months. One passage of play late in that match encapsulates Gorgadze as a player. He catches a high ball on halfway, deftly avoids putting a foot in touch and then surges forward. He floors Italy wing Mattia Bellini with a huge hand-off, steps around one defender and offloads out of a tackle by another. Had Georgia’s handling later in the move been better they would have scored a try.Related: Rugby World’s 100 Best Players in the World Numbers 90-81That’s the range of skills he brings to Georgia’s World Cup campaign. Gorgadze says that the target is “two wins minimum”. That should see them finish third in Pool D, which also features Australia, Fiji, Uruguay and Wales, and thus qualify for RWC 2023. Regardless of what happens in Japan, the growth of the sport in Georgia means the Lelos will remain one of the coming forces in the world game.“As I’ve started playing more, I’ve got more recognised on the streets,” says Gorgadze. “It’s now the first sport for us in Georgia and everyone is happy we’ve had some success. When I started rugby, there were only four children training in the morning group. Now there are hundreds of boys and girls playing.“It’s a massive honour to represent your country and it’s also a big responsibility because lots of kids and parents look up to you.”Gorgadze is a hugely impressive young man, not only in the high-level performances he produces on the pitch but his attitude off it. He can speak four languages – Georgian, Russian, English and French – and is aware of the bigger picture, recognising the part he plays in developing the sport as a role model. He’s even done a spot of coaching in France and says working with children has helped him as a player because it makes him look at the game differently. This ‘Rock Star’ has the potential to be a smash hit in world rugby – look out for him on the pitches of Japan in the coming weeks. Published on January 21, 2016 at 8:32 pm Contact Paul: [email protected] | @pschweds Facebook Twitter Google+ Andrew Armstrong already knew Bowling Green’s coaching staff. He already committed to it once. And after head coach Dino Babers moved to Syracuse and took six assistants with him, Armstrong eventually chose Babers’ staff again. But it was tight ends coach Reno Ferri, who was previously at Towson, not Bowling Green, that helped swing Armstrong even more toward SU. Ferri, like Armstrong, played at Cardinal Mooney (Ohio) High School and was teammates with Chris Amill, the current defensive coordinator there.“The connection’s real strong,” Armstrong said. “It’s just great to have another Cardinal Mooney figure up there that understands where I come from and the great football we play in Youngstown, Ohio.” Armstrong took an official visit to Syracuse this past weekend, announced his commitment to SU on Wednesday morning and received an in-home visit from defensive coordinator Brian Ward on Wednesday evening. Armstrong originally chose BGSU in June, but decommitted on Dec. 10 after the coaching changes. Syracuse emerged as a strong contender given his relationship with the staff and his visit sealed the deal.“I definitely wanted to go visit Syracuse first (after decommitting) and get to experience that,” Amrstrong said, “and I just fell in love with it from the start.”The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Armstrong is ranked with two stars according to Scout.com. He played strong safety and tight end in high school and has been recruited to play any of the three linebacker positions in Ward’s Tampa 2 defense. Armstrong also had offers — from Cincinnati, Indiana, Wake Forest and Vanderbilt — that he said presented better opportunities, which is why he left Bowling Green. Armstrong didn’t have an offer from Syracuse until he decommitted from Bowling Green.“It’s kind of taboo to go back and recruit guys that you recruited,” Babers said on Dec. 7. “If they decommit, that’s one thing, but if they’re committed to Bowling Green, I can tell you, I will not go after them.”SU’s coaches told Amstrong they’d like him to put on 20-25 pounds to get up to 235 and while he has the ability to play any of three linebacker spots, he said he’d most likely be an inside linebacker. His ability to cover, either players out of the backfield or running streaks down the middle, impressed the Orange’s staff, despite having limited experience at linebacker. At Cardinal Mooney, Armstrong didn’t play a Tampa-2 system, but said his experience as a safety will help him in a linebacker position that often drops into zone coverage.Armstrong is the 13th member of Syracuse’s 2016 recruiting class and the eighth to commit under Babers, but he’s the first one that was previously committed to Bowling Green.“Three months ago I was set in stone on going to Bowling Green and playing football there,” Armstrong said, “but it’s just crazy how things change throughout this process.” Comments
“First of all, he’s a nobody,” Embiid told TNT. “And when opponents try to do stuff like that, that’s just to get us out of the game, I’m too valuable to my team, that’s why I didn’t react.”Joel Embiid on Jared Dudley:”He’s a nobody” 💀💀💀pic.twitter.com/d1FZFiETSf— SNY (@SNYtv) April 20, 2019The 76ers center did not try to respond to Dudley’s shove and he explained why after. NBA playoffs 2019: Joel Embiid’s flagrant leads to scuffle, Jimmy Butler, Jared Dudley ejections “In that type of situation I just have to stay composed and be mature and let it go,” he said. “Because my teammates need me more than (his teammates) need him, so I’ve just got to be mature.”Embiid may not have reacted but Jimmy Butler certainly did as he shoved Dudley right after he made contact with Embiid. That resulted in a scuffle that extended out into the crowd as officials tried to get it under control.Dudley started a small feud with the 76ers when he said Ben Simmons was just average in the half-court before Game 3.Simmons didn’t take kindly to that first addressing the comments by saying, “It’s coming from Jared Dudley, come on,” and then following that up with a statement game in which he scored a playoff career-high 31 points in a Game 3 win in Brooklyn. Butler got involved with the war of words as well after that game saying Simmons was far from just average. This feud is entertaining to watch, but it’s also one that is disappointingly very close to over. The 76ers lead the series 3-1 and have a chance to close it out in Philadelphia in Game 5 on Tuesday.
Footprints in the sands of time have been found at two different locations. What tales do they tell? One is a footprint of a Roman soldier. EurekAlert described how the sandal print was uncovered at Hippos, or Susita, on a hill east of the Sea of Galilee. It hints that soldiers participated in building the walls of the city. The Israel newspaper Haaretz contained some more details about the find, and Todd Bolen commented on its limited tie-in to Biblical history on his Bible Places Blog. Another print is claimed to be far older. The BBC News reported what may be the “oldest human footprint ever found.” The article did not describe the print, but called it “human” instead of ape-like. The problem is that it is claimed to be two million years old, or more – as much as 3 million, maybe even older than Lucy. The secretary general of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, Zahi Hawass, is calling it possibly “the most important discovery in Egypt.” Others are not so sure what to think of it.You, too, could leave tracks that will allow future scientists to speculate. For fun, leave a note with your next footprint saying, “Today’s date is August 28, 1,598,251 BC.”(Visited 26 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0

Minister of National Security, Hon. Dr. Horace Chang, has commended members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) for continuing to “take the fight” to gangs in communities across the island. He said that in Area Two alone (involving St. Mary, St. Ann and Portland), the police has been successful in apprehending 23 members of one gang.He pointed out that many of the murders being committed in the island involve people who are familiar with each other and “also gang members killing gang members”.“Our main focus is to continue to apprehend gang leaders. We intend to disrupt their operations while diminishing their status as dons and heroes within our communities. We are going to bring them to justice and lock them away,” Dr. Chang said.He said that the Government will also be going after their assets, including those “they have been trying to conceal”.Dr. Chang was addressing members of the St. Ann Chamber of Commerce at a recent function at the Almond Tree Restaurant in Ocho Rios. The National Security Minister told the business people that the Government “remains steadfast in our mission to serve and protect all of our citizen”.”He said that the Ministry’s five-point crime plan remains an effective tool in going after the criminals, pledging that no stone will be left unturned to make communities safe.He had high praises for the St. Ann Police Division, noting that murders have been trending downwards in the parish over the past year.Dr. Chang said the Government recognises that major investment has to be made in order to ensure that the security forces have the tools to operate at an optimal level.“Security is one of those critical things that, as a Government, we have to provide. It is also something that will lead to sustainable development…something which will take us on that road to prosperity,” he pointed out.Meanwhile, he informed that rehabilitation work will be done on a number of police stations across the island.“Our hard-working police men and women deserve to be operating in a proper work environment, and we will be doing all that we can to make that a reality,” he said.
